The drive from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park follows the RN2 highway northwest through some of Rwanda’s most beautiful highland scenery.

Road quality: Excellent tarmac from Kigali to Musanze — one of Rwanda’s best-maintained highways. The final section from Musanze to Kinigi is 15 km of good tarmac turning to murram (gravel) approaching the park boundary.

What You See on the Drive
The Kigali to Volcanoes drive is one of Rwanda’s most beautiful road journeys:
Kigali to Musanze (first 90 km):
Leaving Kigali you immediately enter Rwanda’s extraordinary hill country — the road climbs and descends through endless terraced hillsides with small farming villages red clay soil and the unmistakable beauty that gives Rwanda its name the Land of a Thousand Hills.
At the top of the Nyirangarama pass approximately 60 km from Kigali the landscape opens dramatically — on a clear day you can see for 50 kilometres in every direction across Rwanda’s green rolling hills. This viewpoint consistently produces gasps from first-time visitors.
Musanze to Kinigi (final 15 km):
As you turn off the main highway toward Kinigi the Virunga volcanoes begin to appear ahead — first as dark shapes behind cloud then increasingly distinct as you approach. By the time you reach Kinigi the volcanoes fill the entire northern horizon — Karisimbi Bisoke Sabyinyo Gahinga — a wall of ancient volcanic peaks rising from the valley floor.

The day trip works well if:
- You have very limited time in Rwanda — 1–2 days only
- You are fit and comfortable with an early start and long day
- Your gorilla family is found within 1–2 hours of trekking
- You are staying in Kigali and want to maximise time there
The day trip is NOT ideal if:
- Your gorilla family requires 4–5 hours of trekking to find
- You want to be fresh and fully energised for the trek
- You want to experience the Virunga landscape properly
- You want to add any other activities (Dian Fossey hike golden monkeys)
Our recommendation: Spend at least 1 night near Volcanoes National Park before your trek. Arriving the evening before — having dinner watching the volcanoes at sunset sleeping well and being fresh for the 7am briefing — makes a significant difference to your experience and your energy during the trek.
The gorilla encounter deserves your best physical and mental state. A 3:30am departure from Kigali does not always deliver that.

Process: Exit Rwanda immigration → cross the border on foot → enter Uganda immigration → vehicle crosses separately → rejoin your vehicle on the Uganda side

These are the tips you will only get from people who actually do this every week:
Tip 1 — Avoid Kigali Rush Hour
Kigali has significant traffic congestion in the morning rush hour (7:00–9:00am) and evening (5:00–7:00pm). For day trip departures we always leave at 3:30am — well before traffic builds. For overnight trips we either depart before 7:00am or after 9:30am to avoid the worst congestion on the Kigali exit roads.
Tip 2 — The Musanze Bakery Stop
On early morning departures our drivers always stop at a bakery in Musanze town — the local bakeries open from 5:30am and serve excellent fresh bread mandazi (Rwandan fried dough) and hot tea. This is usually around 6:00am — perfect timing for breakfast before the 7:00am briefing. Ask your driver to include this stop.
Tip 3 — Book the Mountain-View Side at Your Lodge
When booking accommodation near Volcanoes National Park always request a room or tent with a view toward the volcanoes. Waking up to Karisimbi and Bisoke at sunrise — particularly if there is early morning mist — is one of the most extraordinary mornings available anywhere in Rwanda.
Tip 4 — The Best Time to Leave Kinigi for the Drive Home
After your gorilla trek — which typically finishes between 1:00pm and 3:00pm — you have a choice: drive straight back to Kigali or stop in Musanze for lunch first. Our recommendation: stop in Musanze for lunch at a good local restaurant. You will be hungry the drive home is long and arriving back in Kigali slightly later (5:00–6:00pm) rather than rushing is almost always the better experience.
Tip 5 — The Best Photography Spot on the Drive
At kilometre 62 from Kigali on the RN2 highway there is a viewpoint on the Nyirangarama ridge — look right (north) for the finest panoramic Rwanda landscape view on the entire Kigali-Musanze road. Ask your driver to slow down here. This is one of the most photographed spots in Rwanda for good reason.
Tip 6 — Your Porter is Non-Negotiable
We have said this many times but from our position in Kigali we see the difference every week between trekkers who hire a porter and those who do not. Always hire a porter. $15–$20. They carry your bag help you on difficult terrain and provide additional income directly to the community surrounding the park. There is no reason not to hire one.
Tip 7 — The Kinigi Briefing Toilet
There are toilets at Kinigi Park Headquarters but they are basic. Use the toilet at your lodge before departure and carry tissues in your daypack. You will not regret this advice.
Tip 8 — Signal and Connectivity
Mobile signal is good on the Kigali to Musanze road — MTN Rwanda and Airtel Rwanda both have coverage throughout. Signal becomes patchy approaching Kinigi and inside the forest there is no signal at all. Download offline maps before departure.
