3-Day Rwanda Safari — Gorillas, Golden Monkeys & Twin Lakes

A 3-day Rwanda safari is the most popular and most complete short safari package in Rwanda — and it is easy to understand why. In just three days you experience the full range of what makes Rwanda one of Africa’s most extraordinary destinations: endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, playful golden monkeys leaping through bamboo forest, and the serene beauty of Rwanda’s Twin Lakes nestled between ancient volcanic hills.

This carefully crafted 3-day Rwanda safari package by Go Safaris Africa covers everything — gorilla permit, accommodation, comfortable 4×4 transport, expert guides, and a seamless experience from Kigali pickup to final drop-off.

Why a 3-Day Rwanda Safari is Perfect

Three days hits the perfect balance for Rwanda — enough time to experience gorillas, primates, and scenery without rushing, while remaining compact enough for travellers combining Rwanda with other East African destinations.

A 3-day Rwanda safari is ideal for:

  • Travellers combining Rwanda with Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda
  • First-time visitors to Rwanda wanting a complete introduction
  • Travellers with one week in East Africa wanting 3 days in Rwanda
  • Anyone who wants gorillas AND more — not just a single day trek
  • Couples and honeymooners wanting a romantic short safari

3-Day Rwanda Safari: Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Meals: Lunch and dinner (own cost or lodge included depending on package level) Accommodation: Lodge near Volcanoes National Park

Morning — Kigali Pickup and Scenic Transfer

Your Go Safaris Africa driver-guide collects you from your Kigali hotel at 7:00am for the scenic 2.5-hour drive northwest to Volcanoes National Park through Rwanda’s spectacular thousand hills landscape.

Unlike the pre-dawn departure on a 1-day trek, the Day 1 transfer on this 3-day Rwanda safari is a relaxed, scenic journey. Your guide points out key landmarks, explains Rwanda’s remarkable post-genocide recovery story, and briefs you on what to expect during your gorilla trek the following morning.

Afternoon — Musanze Town and Park Surroundings

Arrive at your lodge near Volcanoes National Park by late morning. After checking in and a leisurely lunch, the afternoon offers several wonderful options:

Musanze Caves — a dramatic network of lava tube caves beneath Musanze town, formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. A fascinating 1-hour guided tour (approximately $10 per person).

Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village — an immersive cultural experience with a former poacher community that now works in conservation tourism. Traditional dance, drumming, banana beer tasting, and demonstrations of Rwandan daily life.

Twin Lakes visit — Lakes Burera and Ruhondo sit just 30 minutes from the park and offer some of the most beautiful scenery in Rwanda. A quiet afternoon walk along the lake shore with volcano views is a perfect way to settle into your 3-day Rwanda safari.

Evening: Dinner at your lodge with views of the Virunga volcanoes. Your guide briefs you on tomorrow’s gorilla trek — wake-up time, what to wear, and what to expect.

Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Meals: Breakfast (lodge), lunch (packed or restaurant), dinner (lodge) Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 1 Highlight: One hour with a wild mountain gorilla family

This is the heart of your 3-day Rwanda safari — and it will be a day you remember for the rest of your life.

5:30am: Wake-up call at your lodge.

6:30am: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park Headquarters at Kinigi.

7:00am: Gorilla trek briefing. Rangers assign your group to a specific gorilla family. Your group of maximum 8 people sets off into the forest led by experienced park rangers and trackers.

The Trek: Through dense rainforest, bamboo zones, and steep volcanic slopes. Trek duration varies from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on gorilla family location. Average trek is 2–4 hours.

The Encounter: One extraordinary hour face to face with a mountain gorilla family. Watch the silverback move through the undergrowth. Observe young gorillas playing in the canopy. Sit in complete silence as a mother gorilla nurses her infant just metres away. There are no words that adequately describe this experience — it must be lived.

After the trek you receive your official gorilla trekking certificate — one of the most meaningful souvenirs from any African safari.

Afternoon: Return to your lodge for lunch. The rest of the afternoon is free — relax on your terrace watching the volcanoes, take a gentle village walk with your guide, or simply rest and reflect on the extraordinary morning.

Evening: Dinner at your lodge. Many guests say this evening — sharing the gorilla experience with fellow travellers over dinner with volcano views — is one of the most memorable meals of their lives.

Day 3 — Golden Monkey Trekking & Twin Lakes

Meals: Breakfast (lodge), lunch (own cost), dinner (own cost in Kigali) Accommodation: Return to Kigali Highlight: Golden monkey trekking + Twin Lakes scenery

Your final morning in the Virunga brings a completely different and equally wonderful primate experience — golden monkey trekking.

7:00am: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park for the golden monkey trek briefing.

Golden Monkey Trekking ($100 per person)

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are one of Africa’s most spectacular and underrated primates — found only in the Virunga volcanic region and critically endangered. They are strikingly beautiful — vivid orange-gold backs against jet-black faces and limbs — and their behaviour is the complete opposite of the gorillas’ quiet dignity.

Golden monkeys are fast, acrobatic, noisy, and endlessly entertaining. They move through the bamboo forest in large groups of 30–80 individuals, leaping between bamboo stalks, chasing each other through the canopy, and occasionally stopping to stare at you with bright curious eyes.

The trek is generally shorter and easier than gorilla trekking — 1–2 hours to locate the troop — followed by one hour with the monkeys. Photographers love golden monkey trekking for the energy, colour, and movement.

Afternoon — Twin Lakes Exploration

After golden monkey trekking your guide takes you on a scenic drive to Lakes Burera and Ruhondo — Rwanda’s Twin Lakes. Sitting at 1,850 metres between the Virunga volcanoes and the Albertine Rift escarpment, these twin lakes are among the most beautiful and least visited places in Rwanda.

The lakes are surrounded by terraced hills, small fishing villages, and peninsulas jutting into calm water that reflects the surrounding volcanoes. Take a short boat trip, walk along the lake shore, or simply sit and absorb one of Rwanda’s most peaceful landscapes.

Late Afternoon — Return to Kigali

Depart Twin Lakes at approximately 3:00pm for the scenic 3-hour drive back to Kigali. Arrive in Kigali by 6:00–7:00pm. Drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

Your 3-day Rwanda safari is complete — three extraordinary days that have introduced you to some of the most remarkable wildlife and scenery in all of Africa.
