When is the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking? It is one of the most common questions we receive at Go Safaris Africa — and the honest answer is that Rwanda can be visited year-round. Mountain gorillas live in the forest every day of the year and permits are available every month.
But some months are significantly better than others — for trail conditions, weather, photography, and value for money. This complete month-by-month guide tells you exactly when to go, when to avoid, and how to get the best possible gorilla trekking experience at Volcanoes National Park.
Rwanda’s Two Seasons at a Glance
Rwanda has two dry seasons and two wet seasons each year. Understanding these seasons is the key to choosing the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking.
| Season | Months | Trekking Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Long dry season | June – September | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent |
| Short dry season | December – February | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very good |
| Long rainy season | March – May | ⭐⭐⭐ Good with preparation |
| Short rainy season | October – November | ⭐⭐⭐ Good with preparation |

The Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking: June to September
June through September is widely considered the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking — and for good reason.
During these months Rwanda experiences its long dry season. Rainfall is minimal, trails in Volcanoes National Park are drier and firmer underfoot, and the vegetation is slightly less dense — making it easier to spot and photograph gorilla families in the forest.
Why June–September is the Best Time
Drier trails: Less mud means easier trekking on the steep volcanic slopes. You will still need good hiking boots, but the trails are far more manageable than during the rainy months.
Better photography: Clearer skies and slightly more open vegetation make for better gorilla photographs. The golden morning light filtering through the forest canopy is spectacular.
More comfortable temperatures: Daytime temperatures around Volcanoes National Park sit at a pleasant 15–20°C during the dry season. Nights are cool and fresh.
Predictable weather: You can plan your trek with more confidence knowing that heavy rain is unlikely to affect your day.
The Downside of Peak Season
The dry season is also peak tourist season. This means:
- Gorilla permits sell out months in advance — sometimes 6–12 months ahead
- Lodge prices are at their highest
- More visitors at the park (though still limited to 8 per gorilla family)
Our advice: If you want to trek in June–September, book your permits and accommodation at least 6 months in advance. Contact Go Safaris Africa as early as possible to secure your preferred dates.
Second Best Time to Visit Rwanda for Gorilla Trekking: December to February
December through February is Rwanda’s short dry season and the second best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking. Trail conditions are nearly as good as the long dry season, permits are slightly easier to obtain, and lodge rates begin to drop in January and February.
December is particularly popular because many international travellers combine their gorilla trek with a Christmas or New Year holiday. January and February offer excellent conditions with fewer crowds — one of the best kept secrets for gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
Highlights of December–February
- January and February: Excellent conditions, fewer tourists, more permit availability
- Christmas/New Year: Very popular — book at least 6 months ahead if travelling in late December
- Lodge rates: January and February offer some of the best rates of the year
- Wildlife: Many animals are active and visible across Rwanda’s national parks
Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda During the Rainy Season: March to May
March through May is Rwanda’s long rainy season — and while it is not the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking in terms of trail conditions, it is far from impossible. Many experienced travellers actually prefer the rainy season for specific reasons.
Challenges of March–May
- Trails become muddy and slippery on the steep volcanic slopes
- Rain can fall heavily at any time during the day
- Vegetation is very dense — gorillas can be harder to spot and photograph
- Some lower trails may become temporarily impassable
Advantages of March–May
Cheaper permits and lodges: While permit prices are fixed at $1,500 regardless of season, lodge rates drop significantly — sometimes 20–30% below peak season prices.
Lush and beautiful scenery: The rainforest is at its most vivid and green. Waterfalls are flowing, flowers are blooming, and the landscape is extraordinarily beautiful.
Fewer tourists: You will share the park with far fewer visitors, making the experience feel more private and exclusive.
Gorillas are still there: The gorillas do not migrate or hide during rain. You will still find them — your ranger trackers locate the family every single day regardless of weather.
Our advice for rainy season trekking:
- Bring excellent waterproof gear — jacket, trousers, and gaiters
- Hire a porter — they are invaluable on slippery terrain
- Book a lodge close to the park to minimise travel on wet roads
- Embrace the adventure — rainy season gorilla treks have their own wild magic

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda in October and November
October and November bring Rwanda’s short rainy season. Conditions are similar to March–May — wetter trails, lush scenery, cheaper lodges, and fewer crowds. November in particular can be quite rainy.
However, October and November are also when Rwanda hosts its famous Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony — a spectacular cultural celebration where newly born gorillas receive their names. If your travel dates are flexible, attending Kwita Izina is a wonderful addition to a gorilla trekking safari.

Practical Tips for Every Season
What to Pack Regardless of Season
- Sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support — essential year-round
- Long-sleeved shirt and long trousers — protects against nettles, insects and cold
- Lightweight rain jacket — even in the dry season, afternoon showers can occur
- Garden gloves — invaluable for grabbing vegetation on steep slopes
- Gaiters — especially important in wet season to keep mud out of boots
- Small daypack with water, snacks, and your camera
Hire a Porter — Always
At just $15–$20, hiring a porter is one of the best decisions you can make regardless of season. In the dry season they carry your bag. In the wet season they carry your bag AND help you navigate slippery terrain. Hiring a porter also directly supports local communities around the park. Read more about our gorilla trekking packages.
Book Permits as Early as Possible
