A 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary is the perfect amount of time to experience the very best this extraordinary country has to offer — from gorilla trekking in the misty Virunga volcanoes to game drives in Akagera National Park, relaxation on Lake Kivu, and the vibrant energy of Kigali city.
Rwanda is one of Africa’s most compact and efficient safari destinations. Everything is within reach — no internal flights needed, no vast distances to cover. A 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary lets you experience gorillas, primates, Big Five wildlife, stunning lake scenery, and rich cultural heritage all in one seamless journey.
This complete 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary is designed by the expert team at Go Safaris Africa — based in Kigali, operating Rwanda safaris every day of the year.
Why 7 Days is the Perfect Rwanda Safari Length
A 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary hits the sweet spot between depth and efficiency:
- 3 days is the minimum for a gorilla-only trip — but you miss so much
- 5 days allows gorillas plus one other destination
- 7 days gives you gorillas, golden monkeys, Big Five game drives, Lake Kivu, and Kigali — the complete Rwanda experience
- 10+ days is ideal if adding Uganda for chimpanzees and more gorilla trekking
For most international travellers flying from Europe, North America, or Asia, a 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary represents the ideal balance of travel time, cost, and experience.

Day-by-Day 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive Kigali: The City of a Thousand Hills
Location: Kigali Accommodation: Kigali hotel (budget $40–$80 / mid-range $100–$200 / luxury $200–$500 per night)
Your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary begins the moment you land at Kigali International Airport. A Go Safaris Africa driver meets you at arrivals and transfers you to your hotel.
Kigali is one of Africa’s most pleasant and surprising capital cities — spotlessly clean, remarkably safe, and full of excellent restaurants, coffee shops, and cultural sites. If you arrive with time and energy, the afternoon offers several wonderful options:
Kigali Genocide Memorial One of the most important and moving sites in all of Africa. The memorial honours the victims of the 1994 genocide and tells the story of Rwanda’s extraordinary journey from tragedy to one of Africa’s greatest success stories. Allow 2–3 hours. Entry is free.
Kimironko Market Kigali’s most vibrant local market — a feast of colour, sound, and local life. Excellent for Rwandan crafts, fabrics, and fresh produce.
Inema Arts Centre A wonderful contemporary arts space in Kigali showcasing Rwanda’s emerging art scene. Studio visits, gallery exhibitions, and craft shopping.
Evening: Dinner at one of Kigali’s excellent restaurants. Try Repub Lounge for Rwandan cuisine, Question Coffee for specialty coffee, or Heaven Restaurant for spectacular city views.
Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking: The Heart of Your Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Location: Volcanoes National Park Accommodation: Lodge near Volcanoes National Park (budget $80–$150 / mid-range $200–$400 / luxury $500–$1,500 per night) Highlight: One hour with a wild mountain gorilla family
This is the day your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary builds towards — and it will exceed every expectation you have.
5:30am: Wake up at your lodge. Your Go Safaris Africa driver-guide transfers you to Kinigi Park Headquarters (15–30 minutes from most lodges).
7:00am: Gorilla trek briefing at Kinigi. Rangers assign your group to a specific gorilla family based on your fitness level and interests. Groups of maximum 8 people set off into Volcanoes National Park.
Trek duration: Anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved overnight. The average trek is 2–4 hours.
The encounter: When you find the gorilla family — and you will find them, rangers track their location from dawn — you have exactly one hour. Sixty minutes that most people describe as the single most powerful wildlife experience of their lives.
Watch a silverback move through the undergrowth. Observe young gorillas wrestling in the trees above you. Lock eyes with a female gorilla sitting just metres away. There are no words that fully prepare you for this moment.
Afternoon: Return to your lodge for lunch. The afternoon can be spent relaxing, visiting the Dian Fossey Museum in Musanze town, exploring local villages, or simply sitting on your lodge terrace watching the volcanoes change colour in the afternoon light.
Evening: Dinner at your lodge. Share gorilla trek stories with fellow travellers over Rwandan Primus beer or a glass of local wine.

Day 3 — Golden Monkey Trekking and Volcano Hike
Location: Volcanoes National Park Accommodation: Same lodge as Day 2 Highlight: Golden monkeys + Mount Bisoke crater lake
Day 3 of your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary keeps you in Volcanoes National Park for two very different but equally wonderful experiences.
Morning — Golden Monkey Trekking ($100 per person)
Golden monkeys are one of Africa’s most spectacular and underrated primates. Found only in the Virunga volcanic region, these critically endangered monkeys are breathtakingly beautiful — vivid orange-gold backs against jet black faces and limbs.
Unlike gorilla trekking which is conducted in near silence, golden monkey trekking is an exuberant, joyful experience. The monkeys move fast, leap acrobatically through bamboo forest, and interact with each other in large social groups of 30–80 individuals. Photographers love golden monkey trekking for the energy and movement.
The trek typically takes 1–3 hours and you spend one hour with the monkey troop. The $100 permit is outstanding value — one of the best wildlife experiences in Rwanda for the price.
Afternoon — Mount Bisoke Volcano Hike ($75 per person) — Optional
For those with energy after the morning trek, the hike to Mount Bisoke’s crater lake is one of the most rewarding afternoon activities in your Rwanda safari itinerary.
The 6–8 hour round trip hike climbs through bamboo forest, giant heather, and Afromontane vegetation to a stunning crater lake at 3,711 metres. On clear days views extend into DRC and Uganda across the Virunga range.
Note: Mount Bisoke is a full-day hike — if you prefer a more relaxed afternoon after gorilla trekking on Day 2, swap the Bisoke hike for a village walk, Dian Fossey tomb hike ($75), or simply relaxing at your lodge.
Day 4 — Transfer to Lake Kivu: Rwanda’s Jewel
Location: Lake Kivu (Gisenyi or Kibuye) Accommodation: Lake Kivu lodge or hotel (budget $50–$100 / mid-range $100–$250 / luxury $250–$600 per night) Highlight: Scenic drive + lake relaxation
Day 4 of your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary shifts pace beautifully — from the intense adventure of gorilla country to the serene beauty of Lake Kivu.
Morning: After breakfast at your Volcanoes National Park lodge, your Go Safaris Africa driver-guide begins the scenic transfer south to Lake Kivu — approximately 2–3 hours through Rwanda’s famous thousand hills.
The drive itself is part of the experience. Rwanda’s landscape is extraordinary — every hill cultivated in neat terraces, every valley lush and green, small villages perched on ridgelines with views stretching for miles. This is a country that rewards slow travel and open windows.
Arrival at Lake Kivu
Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes — 90 km long, 50 km wide, and sitting at 1,460 metres above sea level on the border between Rwanda and DRC. The lake is surrounded by steep volcanic hills, dotted with small islands, and fringed with fishing villages where dugout canoes set out at dawn and return at dusk laden with Nile perch and tilapia.
Afternoon and Evening Activities
- Boat trip on the lake: Explore the islands, visit local fishing communities, and watch the sun set over the DRC mountains from the water
- Swimming: Lake Kivu’s clear fresh water is safe for swimming — a wonderful luxury after days of forest trekking
- Kayaking: Several lodges offer kayak rentals for exploring the lake shoreline
- Simply relaxing: After the intensity of gorilla trekking many travellers simply want to sit on a terrace, drink fresh Rwanda coffee, and watch the lake
Where to Stay on Lake Kivu
- Gisenyi (Rubavu): Northern end of the lake, closest to Volcanoes National Park. Lively town with beaches and excellent restaurants.
- Kibuye (Karongi): Central lake — quieter, more scenic, surrounded by hills and islands. Our favourite Lake Kivu base.
- Cyangugu (Rusizi): Southern end near the DRC border. Quieter still with beautiful peninsulas.
Day 5 — Akagera National Park: Rwanda’s Big Five Safari
Location: Akagera National Park Accommodation: Akagera lodge (mid-range $150–$300 / luxury $400–$800 per night) Highlight: Big Five game drive in Rwanda’s savanna park
Day 5 brings a completely different Rwanda safari experience — from the highland forests and lakes of western Rwanda to the open savanna and wetlands of Akagera National Park in the east.
Morning: Transfer from Lake Kivu to Akagera National Park — approximately 3–4 hours across Rwanda. Your Go Safaris Africa driver-guide uses the journey time to brief you on Akagera’s remarkable conservation story.
Akagera National Park — Rwanda’s Conservation Miracle
Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s great conservation comeback stories. Devastated after the 1994 genocide when thousands of returning refugees settled in the park, Akagera lost most of its large wildlife. Since 2010 — under a management partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks — the park has been transformed.
Lions were reintroduced from South Africa in 2015. Black rhinos arrived in 2017 and 2019. Elephants, hippos, zebras, giraffes, buffalos, leopards, and hundreds of bird species now thrive across the park’s 1,122 km² of savanna, lakes, and woodland.
Today Akagera National Park is a fully functioning Big Five ecosystem and one of the most exciting safari destinations in East Africa — and it is right here in Rwanda, just 2.5 hours from Kigali.
Afternoon Game Drive
Arrive at Akagera in time for a late afternoon game drive — the best time of day for wildlife activity. Your Go Safaris Africa guide knows the park intimately and knows exactly where to find the Big Five.
Look for:
- Lions — reintroduced pride now thriving in the southern savanna
- Black rhinos — rare and precious, Akagera is one of the few places in East Africa where you can still see them
- Elephants — large herds in the northern woodland
- Hippos — abundant in Lake Ihema and the park’s chain of lakes
- Buffalos — massive herds across the savanna
- Giraffes — elegant and numerous throughout the park
- Zebras — large herds on the open plains
- Leopards — present but elusive — a sighting is always special
Evening: Sundowner drink watching the African sunset over Lake Ihema — one of the most beautiful moments of any Rwanda safari itinerary.
“For the complete Akagera guide read our Akagera National Park visitor guide.”
Day 6 — Morning Game Drive + Return to Kigali
Location: Akagera National Park → Kigali Accommodation: Kigali hotel Highlight: Dawn game drive + boat safari
Day 6 of your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary begins before sunrise — the very best time in any African national park.
5:30am: Dawn game drive in Akagera. Early morning is when predators are most active, when mist sits over the lakes, and when the light is magical for photography. Lions are most likely to be spotted in the early morning hours.
Morning — Boat Safari on Lake Ihema
Akagera’s chain of lakes is a wildlife haven and a boat safari on Lake Ihema is one of the highlights of any Rwanda safari itinerary. From the water you can get extraordinarily close to:
- Hippos — enormous pods basking in the shallows
- Nile crocodiles — sunning themselves on the banks
- African fish eagles — diving for fish in spectacular aerial displays
- Shoebill storks — rare and prehistoric-looking birds that birders travel from around the world to see
- Hundreds of waterbirds — herons, storks, kingfishers, pelicans, and more
Midday: Lunch at your Akagera lodge then depart for Kigali — approximately 2.5 hours.
Afternoon in Kigali: Check into your Kigali hotel. The afternoon is free for shopping at the Caplaki Craft Village — Rwanda’s best one-stop shop for local crafts, wooden carvings, woven baskets, and souvenirs.
Evening: Farewell dinner at one of Kigali’s best restaurants. The Go Safaris Africa team recommends Repub Lounge, Fusion Restaurant, or Khana Khazana for an excellent final Rwanda meal.
Day 7 — Kigali Cultural Tour and Departure
Location: Kigali Highlight: Cultural immersion + departure
Your final morning in Rwanda. Depending on your flight time, Day 7 of your 7-day Rwanda safari itinerary offers one last wonderful morning in Kigali.
Morning Options
Kigali Cultural Village (Iwacu) A beautifully presented cultural experience — traditional dance, drumming, banana beer tasting, and demonstrations of Rwandan crafts and daily life. A joyful and authentic morning.
Inema Arts Centre If you didn’t visit on Day 1, this is your last chance. Rwanda’s arts scene is extraordinary — vibrant contemporary painting and sculpture by young Rwandan artists. Everything is for sale and makes a meaningful souvenir.
Nyamirambo Women’s Centre A community organisation in Kigali’s most authentic neighbourhood — guided walking tours of Nyamirambo, cooking classes, and craft shopping that directly supports local women.
Question Coffee Rwanda is one of Africa’s finest coffee producers. Start your last morning with a proper Rwandan specialty coffee at Question Coffee — a social enterprise supporting Rwandan coffee farmers.
Afternoon: Transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight. Your Go Safaris Africa driver-guide sees you off and assists with your luggage.
Until next time, Rwanda. 🦍

How to Customise Your 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary
Every traveller is different. At Go Safaris Africa we tailor every Rwanda safari itinerary to your specific interests, fitness level, and budget. Here are the most popular customisations:
Add Nyungwe Forest Replace Lake Kivu on Day 4 with Nyungwe Forest National Park — home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and one of Rwanda’s most spectacular canopy walkways. Perfect for primate lovers.
Add a Second Gorilla Trek Book a second gorilla permit for Day 3 instead of golden monkeys — double your gorilla time with two different families. Many repeat visitors do this.
Extend to 10 Days — Add Uganda Cross the border after Day 3 into Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and chimpanzee trekking in Kibale. Our most popular extended safari. Read our gorilla trekking Rwanda vs Uganda guide for full details.
Family Safari Adjustment Minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. For families with younger children, replace gorilla trekking with golden monkey trekking, Akagera game drives, and cultural experiences — still an extraordinary Rwanda safari itinerary.
Honeymoon Rwanda Safari Add private game drives, candlelit dinners, spa treatments at luxury lodges, and a private boat sunset cruise on Lake Kivu. Rwanda is one of Africa’s most romantic honeymoon destinations.
