Why Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is Special
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is not just another wildlife reserve. It is the birthplace of gorilla conservation — the place where American researcher Dian Fossey spent 18 years studying and protecting mountain gorillas before her murder in 1985. Her work, immortalised in the film and book Gorillas in the Mist, transformed global understanding of these magnificent animals and launched the conservation movement that saved mountain gorillas from extinction.
Today Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is home to 12 habituated gorilla families — groups that have been carefully introduced to human presence over years of patient work by park rangers and researchers. Each family can be visited by a maximum of 8 tourists per day, making every gorilla trek an intimate and exclusive experience.
The park sits within the larger Virunga Conservation Area — a transboundary protected landscape shared between Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Together these parks protect the entire world population of mountain gorillas — approximately 1,063 individuals as of the most recent census.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
Gorilla trekking is the centrepiece experience of Volcanoes National Park Rwanda and one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters available anywhere on Earth.
How Gorilla Trekking Works
Every morning trekking groups assemble at the Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00am for a briefing. Rangers explain the rules — stay 7 metres from the gorillas at all times, no flash photography, no trekking if you have a cold or illness, speak quietly, move slowly.
Groups of up to 8 people are then assigned to a specific gorilla family and led by experienced park rangers into the forest. Ranger trackers have already been out since dawn locating the gorilla family from where they nested the previous night.
The trek to find the gorillas takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the family has moved. Once found you have exactly one hour with the gorillas — an hour that every single visitor describes as one of the most powerful experiences of their life.
The 12 Habituated Gorilla Families
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda currently has 12 gorilla families open to tourism. Each family has a distinct personality, size, and home range within the park. Some of the most famous include:
Susa Group — one of the largest families, historically the group studied by Dian Fossey. Located at higher altitude making this one of the more challenging treks — but hugely rewarding.
Amahoro Group — meaning “peaceful” in Kinyarwanda, this calm family is known for relaxed interactions and is popular with photographers.
Kwitonda Group — a large family that moved from DRC into Rwanda and is now well habituated. Known for a dominant silverback.
Hirwa Group — a smaller family known for being very relaxed around visitors.
When you book through Go Safaris Africa we advise which family is most suitable for your fitness level and interests.

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda requires moderate fitness. You must be able to walk uphill on uneven terrain for 2–6 hours. The minimum age is 15 years. People with serious mobility issues may find the trek very challenging — contact us to discuss options.
Porter services are available at the park for $15–$20 and are highly recommended for everyone. For a full preparation guide read our complete gorilla trekking packing list.
Golden Monkey Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda
Golden monkey trekking is the perfect complement to gorilla trekking and one of the most joyful wildlife experiences in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda.
Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are a critically endangered subspecies found only in the Virunga volcanic region. They are spectacularly beautiful — a vivid contrast of bright golden-orange fur on their backs and jet black limbs and faces. They live in large social groups of 30–100 individuals and are extraordinarily lively, acrobatic, and entertaining to watch.
Golden Monkey Trekking Permit
A golden monkey trekking permit costs $100 USD per person — a fraction of the gorilla permit price. Most visitors combine a gorilla trek on day one with a golden monkey trek on day two, making extraordinary use of their time in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda.
The trek to find golden monkeys is generally shorter and easier than gorilla trekking — usually 1–2 hours. You spend one hour with the monkey troop, watching them leap through bamboo forest with breathtaking speed and agility.

Mount Bisoke (3,711m) — Most Popular Hike

Permit: $75 USD per person
Mount Karisimbi (4,507m) — The Ultimate Challenge
The highest volcano in the Virunga range and the highest point in Rwanda. The Karisimbi hike is a two-day overnight trek involving camping on the mountain at 3,700m. This is a serious mountaineering challenge requiring excellent fitness and cold weather gear.
Permit: $400 USD per person (includes camping)
Mount Sabyinyo (3,634m) — The Border Peak
Sabyinyo sits on the triple border between Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC. The summit allows you to stand in three countries simultaneously — a memorable and unique experience.
Permit: $75 USD per person
Mount Gahinga (3,474m) — The Bog Walk
A beautiful hike through giant lobelia and heather moorland to a small crater lake at the summit. Less visited than Bisoke making it a wonderfully peaceful experience.
Permit: $75 USD per person
The Dian Fossey Experience
No visit to Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is complete without acknowledging the extraordinary legacy of Dian Fossey. Two Dian Fossey experiences are available:
Dian Fossey Tomb Hike
A 3–4 hour hike to the site of Fossey’s Karisoke Research Centre deep in the forest, where you visit her grave alongside the graves of gorillas she studied and loved including the famous silverback Digit. This is a deeply moving experience.
Permit: $75 USD per person
Dian Fossey Museum — Musanze
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund has a museum in Musanze town that tells the full story of Fossey’s life, research, and the ongoing gorilla conservation work. Entry is free and takes approximately 1–2 hours. A wonderful complement to your gorilla trek.
Birding in Parc nationale de volcan Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda sits within the Albertine Rift — one of the most biodiverse regions in Africa and a globally important bird area. Over 200 bird species have been recorded in the park including numerous Albertine Rift endemics that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth.
Species to look for include the Rwenzori turaco, handsome francolin, Grauer’s rush warbler, red-faced woodland warbler, and the spectacular crowned crane. Even non-birders are amazed by the birdlife encountered on gorilla treks.
