How Gorilla Trekking Works
Every morning trekking groups assemble at the Kinigi Park Headquarters at 7:00am for a briefing. Rangers explain the rules — stay 7 metres from the gorillas at all times, no flash photography, no trekking if you have a cold or illness, speak quietly, move slowly.
Groups of up to 8 people are then assigned to a specific gorilla family and led by experienced park rangers into the forest. Ranger trackers have already been out since dawn locating the gorilla family from where they nested the previous night.
The trek to find the gorillas takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on where the family has moved. Once found you have exactly one hour with the gorillas — an hour that every single visitor describes as one of the most powerful experiences of their life.
The 12 Habituated Gorilla Families
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda currently has 12 gorilla families open to tourism. Each family has a distinct personality, size, and home range within the park. Some of the most famous include:
Susa Group — one of the largest families, historically the group studied by Dian Fossey. Located at higher altitude making this one of the more challenging treks — but hugely rewarding.
Amahoro Group — meaning “peaceful” in Kinyarwanda, this calm family is known for relaxed interactions and is popular with photographers.
Kwitonda Group — a large family that moved from DRC into Rwanda and is now well habituated. Known for a dominant silverback.
Hirwa Group — a smaller family known for being very relaxed around visitors.

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are a critically endangered subspecies found only in the Virunga volcanic region. Golden Monkey Trekking Permit

Volcano Hiking in Volcanoes Park Rwanda

Mount Bisoke (3,711m) — Most Popular Hike
The hike to the crater lake summit of Mount Bisoke takes 6–8 hours round trip and is the most popular volcano hike in the park. The reward at the summit is a stunning crater lake surrounded by mist and Afromontane vegetation. On clear days views extend across into DRC and Uganda.

Mount Karisimbi (4,507m) — The Ultimate Challenge

Getting to Volcanoes National Park
From Kigali (Most Common Route)
Volcanoes National Park Rwanda is 110 km northwest of Kigali — approximately 2.5 hours by road via the RN2 highway through Musanze. The road is well-maintained tarmac all the way to Musanze and then a short drive on dirt road to Kinigi park headquarters.
